I have about an equal mixture of old friends and people who subscribed to me because I'm vaguely prominent in some DW circles reading this. So probably at least some people will find it interesting if I fill in the friendly survey with some general GTKY detail. Plus, I like talking about myself, and I'm procrastinating.

Anyway, I got this from Boxofdelights, Falcongrrl and Jesse-the-k.
Name: My parents gave me the name Rachel. It comes from the Hebrew רחל which means ewe-lamb. I've had three decades to get used to thinking of myself by that name, and I feel neutral-to-positive about it. I'll answer to most variants (Rachie, Rochele, Rachelle, Rahelli, Raquel etc), but I generally dislike Rach.
Online I'm known as Liv. It's actually originally short for
livredor, my original LJ username, but people parsed it oddly, and I got quite used to feeling like that was part of my identity. I think of it as the Scandinavian name Liv, meaning Eve or alive, rather than as short for Olivia. Nowadays even my husband alternates between calling me Liv and Rachel, even in the same sentence sometimes, so it feels at least as much like me as my given name.
I have some other names too but I won't write them here as I'm trying to keep Google out of my journal.
Preferred gender pronoun: She / her. I don't have any strong attachment to being regarded as female, but I don't feel strongly any other gender either, so might as well go with what's easy. I'm quite happy with epicene pronouns (mild preference for zie / hir, but whatever you're comfortable with, basically), but I don't have the energy to insist on them.
Birthday: I was born during the last few days of 1978.
Where do you live and/or time zone: Stoke-on-Trent in the Midlands in England. So GMT.
What are you studying/What are you working as: I'm a university lecturer, which means that half my job consists of teaching the biological bits of medicine to first and second year medical students, and half consists of cancer research. Or currently, trying to manoeuvre myself into a position where I can do cancer research.
What makes you happy/hobbies: What makes me happiest is good conversation and making connections with people. That's why blogging is so prominent among my hobbies. I also like stories very much, whether that's stories in novels or just people telling eachother stories, biographical or fictional.
An interesting fact about you: I've been leading services in synagogues of various different denominations since I was 8.
Are you in love/have a crush at the moment?: Yes. I basically never get over crushes or romantic attachments, so I'm still in love with almost everybody I've ever been in love with and I still crush on all the people I've ever crushed on (assuming I've interacted with them at all in the past several years.)
Favorite place to be: My favourite place I've ever been in my life doesn't really exist any more, but it used to be Hengrave Hall in Suffolk. I like being more or less anywhere my friends are. I probably feel most rooted and at home in southern Scotland; Edinburgh is my favourite city. The most beautiful place I've ever been Yemin Moshe just outside Jerusalem, but I wouldn't particularly want to spend longer than a few hours there.
A word to describe yourself: Extroverted.
FANDOM
Favorite Fandom(s): I don't really have a fandom as such. Firefly is the only canon where I've seen enough of it to get all the references in fanworks and not have to worry too much about being spoiled (though I haven't seen Serenity). I also quite like Harry Potter, the fanfic more than the canon, though I avoid anything sexually explicit set during the series because I am not at all interested in erotic material involving teenagers.
OTP/OT3: Inara/Kaylee! I actually read a fair amount of John/Rodney from SGA even though I've never seen the original series. Harry/Ron/Hermione as grown-ups in futurefic. I'm also somewhat convinced by Angel/Xander in the early bits of Buffy that I've seen (though I'm not seeking out fic until I manage to get further into the series), and I kind of wish there was a fandom for Morpheus/Neo in The Matrix. And well-written Arthur/Eames from Inception from time to time.
Celebrities you flail over: I basically don't, really, certainly not in the crushy sense. I have a slightly flaily fan interaction with
papersky, because I think highly of her books, and she's actually right there in parts of the internet where I hang out, but half the time when I try to interact with her I get tongue-tied, say the wrong thing and come across as aggressive.
Favorite music: My absolutely favourite musical piece in the world is Fauré's Requiem. It does seem a bit weird to pick a single example out of an entire art-form, but that is so very special to me.
PLUS
One thing you like about LJ/DW: I love LJ because it was my route into blogging, which I adore, and because it allowed me to keep in touch with a bunch of people I might otherwise have drifted away from after university. I love DW because it's like LJ but run for the benefit of people like me and doesn't have any advertising, and for a bunch of other reasons that I won't enumerate here because I know it annoys some people when I enthuse about it too much.
Two things you like about yourself: Many people find me good company and interesting to talk to. I'm a good teacher.
What House in Hogwarts are you in/would you be in?: Ravenclaw all the way, baby. I don't really believe that people can be divided up neatly into four categories based on a single criterion, but it just so happens that I'm very, very Ravenclaw: I'm motivated by curiosity above almost anything else!

Please fill out this survey so I can get to know you better. Old friends, fill it out too! Even if I know you well, I may find out something about you I never knew. Feel free to spread this around so we can all get to know each other. If there is a question you don't want to or don't know how to answer, just tell me something else instead. That is reasonably polite as these things go, but it skirts a little close to pressure to continue the chain / pass on the meme; my take is that you should copy it into your journal if you feel like it, and not if you don't!
