I've had a really marvellous week, which hasn't left me lots of time online. Sort of last gasp attempt at a not-quite summer holiday, namely spending time with people I like rather than travelling to exotic places.
Last weekend I went to the wedding of an old friend from uni, Gerv. Gerv is an Evangelical Christian, so I was expecting something a bit like
robhu's wedding, but it turned out that his bride is more of a mainstream Anglican, so the service was pretty much like what you see on TV; weird how very, very familiar the C of E wedding liturgy seems to me. And definitely managed to be inspiring; it was very visible that the people involved, both the couple and the celebrants, really believed in the religious stuff. I am trying to resist following the Jewish tradition of criticizing both the preaching and the food, but really my main problem was that the lack of any substantial meal meant that there was absolutely no time available to talk to the couple. I mean, you don't go to a wedding expecting to have long conversations with your old friends, but at least a chance to exchange congratulations would have been more satisfying. Anyway I really hope they have a wonderful life together; Gerv, because of his religious beliefs, has never dated before meeting the One, so I suspect they may have a steep learning curve, but then again he's one of the most sincere, kind, generous people I know, which can't hurt at all.
Then I went straight on to
alextiefling and
katieastrophe's awesome party. I was proud of myself finding a direct bus from Bromley to Greenwich, and showed up still in my silk wedding finery. And honestly, though I've been to a lot of good parties in the last several years, this one really stood out. Lots of people I was really happy to see;
jack brought
pseudomonas, and
khalinche was there with
timeplease, and I managed to grab a little bit of gossip with
doseybat and of course I'm very fond of the hosts. There was Apples to Apples (complete with silly hats), and some very impressive cleavages, and lots of really diverse home-made food, and shiny cocktails (I was barbaric enough to sip my B52, cos I don't know how to drink shooters, but it was mmmmm tasty), and a really fantastic erotic steampunk story read by the author,
darkfloweruk. Squee! (Plus an almost homoeopathic quantity of kissing, which has made me buzzy and smiley way out of proportion to its duration.)
Had a relaxed couple of days with
jack, when we did the very English thing of going to the beach and for walks in the countryside in spite of the not very clement weather. Also we had some nice meals out, at a little crêpe café where they did smoothies involving crushed up chocolate bars, and a south Indian meal at Hanging Mangoes, which I love very much, and dim sum at Charlie Chan's (a Cambridge institution I'd never managed to attend before) for
bugshaw's birthday. Followed by a pleasant stroll along the Cam with
jack's friends T&R.
Two days of work, then the long bank holiday weekend. We went back to the monkeys on Saturday, and plan to go for a drive later on today, but we're mostly taking it easy as the whole rest of the world is on holiday this weekend. Plus I have a ton of organization to do, because my parents are visiting next weekend and my standards of housekeeping are in no way comparable to theirs, and straight after that it's Rosh haShana, with me leading most of the services for the festival period. I need to write some sermons, any ideas?
