Updating DW in an odd awkward break between teaching. Wow, just like old times. Anyway, I still have many essays in my head but I don't have time to write them, so here is some other people's stuff instead:

• metaquotes picked up legionseagle's hilarious Summary of Ulysses before I got to it; it cracked me up even though (I confess) I haven't read the original. So just in case you haven't already seen it, worth reading.
  
  
• papersky wrote an awesome poem about menstruation. FYI, if you go directly to her journal rather than following my link, she refers to it in the cut text as icky female stuff.
  
  
• And via green_knight, zeborah's magisterial answer to the plaint of where's my hoverboard?

As someone who has read Ulysses, I can testify to its accuracy. It's extremely clear that around chapter 3, Joyce got annoyed with how much of a tool Stephen is and introduced Bloom. And the enjoyability of the subsequent chapters for me is largely determined by the Bloom:Stephen ratio.

Heh, thanks for the endorsement. I liked your advice about how best to read Ulysses, too. My brother was reading it when he was in hospital in Israel, and he was trying get the nurses to read it out to him, which caused great bemusement.

I'm not sure I can think of a book 'for grownups' that's more fun to read aloud than Ulysses.

Some nice posts here. I've been feeling too busy / tired / stressed to comment or write much recently but still managing to read and enjoy. And now going back to try and comment on some of the nice things I've read.
