liv: Table laid with teapot, scones and accoutrements (yum)

Next week I'm travelling to Hungary, a country I've never visited before. We (well, mostly [livejournal.com profile] ghoti) planned the essential bits, the travel and accommodation, months ago, but it's come up faster than I'd expected and I haven't had time to think about what we're actually going to do there. It doesn't really matter since we're a party of six adults and two children, so I'm sure other people will have ideas, but I thought I might ask for advice anyway.

Poll answers viewable to me only because I'm mainly asking for addresses. If you want to answer the first question in a (publicly viewable) comment, please feel free:

My parents were just in Budapest two weeks ago- I asked my mother for recommendations:

St.Stephen's Cathedral, we had a tour of the Parliament which was short, but it is very elaborate and beautiful, the Terror Museum is very interesting, but depressing ( from the Gestapo to the KGB) We also heard an organ concert in the cathedral and saw a folk dancing show. Dad didn't like the folk dancing ( it was very touristy) We didn't spend much time in the Castle area in Buda - across the river because it was very hot out. It is supposed to be nice. Also we didn't do any of the Turkish baths - I wanted to go, but dad said he's been to hot springs in the US and that it would be the same. I would have taken a Danube river boat ride, or dinner cruise (again too touristy for dad). Beautiful city. Tell your friend to enjoy. I think we went to a brew pub and drank beer brewed by monks.

Based on my photos and my memory: Visit the musuem of the history of the city, the Parliament building and the Dohány Street shul, and climb the hill of Buda to get good views out over Pest. Also, when crossing the Danube between Buda and Pest, stop to consider that this was the border of the Roman Empire.

Postcard has arrived and is perfect in terms of picture, photographer, and story behind picture — thank you very much!

Soundbite

Miscellaneous. Eclectic. Random. Perhaps markedly literate, or at least suffering from the compulsion to read any text that presents itself, including cereal boxes.
