Considering that I'm unemployed I've been remarkably busy lately. Some of that is job hunting, and some is planning for the big festivals coming up, but lots of it is fun.

I met up with [personal profile] redbird, whom I haven't seen in person for around a decade, while she was in London. She invited other people I'm excited to spend time with, [personal profile] oursin and [personal profile] green_knight. We had lunch in the Betjamen in St Pancras, which was almost completely empty so we got to enjoy the excessive decor and the good conversation in a quiet environment. And then we dipped into the permanent 'Treasures' exhibition at the British Library, since [personal profile] redbird hadn't been before. When our brains were full we went to Ruby Violet for icecream and continued chatting. I had a beetroot and ginger sorbet, which tasted wonderful but didn't quite cohere. It was basically a perfect day.

Wonderful [personal profile] ghoti_mhic_uait agreed to come with me to the most exciting concert I've come across in a while: the male voice early music ensemble De Profundis doing some Palestrina settings of texts from the Song of Songs, a mixture of motets and a Mass setting. It was every bit as amazing as I hoped.

Then we briefly dropped in to [personal profile] emperor's party and met lots of lovely people who were gratifyingly pleased to see me.

Sunday evening [personal profile] cjwatson joined me for dumplings in Mamasun followed by a super interesting talk at shul about pre-war Jewish Belarus. Apparently in the 1920s there were about a million Jews, making up about half the population of most major towns, and Yiddish was an official language. Also lots of famous Israelis come from Belarus, like Ben Yehuda the Hebraist, Bialik the poet and Peres the statesman. Also the artist Chagall, which I did know, and Marks the founder of the Marks and Spencer chain.

In between [personal profile] jack and our OSOs and I have been playing our new game, Wingspan. It's sort of cross between two of the greatest games I've seen recently, Terraforming Mars and Scythe. It's not quite as great as either, but on the plus side it's much less complex and it's a fairly low brain one hour game. Also it's gorgeous, with absolutely lovely paintings of American birds on the cards.

I played Wingspan last month. I liked it, too. And in addition to the pretty pictures of birds, the names of the birds were really fun to say aloud.

Soundbite

Miscellaneous. Eclectic. Random. Perhaps markedly literate, or at least suffering from the compulsion to read any text that presents itself, including cereal boxes.
