livI've really tried to keep the option open for people to comment anonymously. There are lots of good reasons for it and I don't want to insist people create yet another account just to interact. But I've had a second big flood of spam in just a few weeks, captchas slow it down to once every 2-3 minutes rather than literally constant, but that's still too much spam to deal with.
If you want to respond to my posts regularly, you can create a Dreamwidth account. Accounts are free of cost and you get most features without any payment, certainly more than adequate for just commenting on a few journals you follow. You do have to provide a real email address, which is itself an anti-spam measure; obviously in an ideal world it would be possible to create a totally anon account, but sadly that just leads to the site drowning in spam. You also need to provide your date of birth, because of US laws about minors accessing websites. Both email and DOB will be kept completely private, but will be visible to the site admins. So this isn't the ideal option if you prefer anon commenting for privacy reasons. It is better than many sites as it doesn't require any documentation, payment or bank details, or any offline details like your wallet name or address, but it still sucks.
If you already have an account on a supported site, such as LiveJournal, Steam, Microsoft accounts, or Wordpress, you can instead log in using OpenID. This isn't a great option as it still requires you to provide a real email address, and IME it's pretty flaky.
If you're reading my blog because you know me outside DW (hello relatives!) but don't want to create an account here, you already have other ways of contacting me, and I'm really sorry for removing the option to just type a comment straight on the page.
I don't exactly want to make it easy for people to insult me or my friends, so I suppose one small upside of this nuisance situation is that people will have to jump through more hoops to be able to post gratuitous insults. My thought is that if you have an actual issue with me, it's on you to let me know who you are.
