Giant non-fandom friending meme
Mar. 15th, 2010 12:47 pm![[personal profile]](https://www.dreamwidth.org/img/silk/identity/user.png)
Here's the thing: a lot of people are about ready to leave LJ over the latest shenanigans. But they don't want to make the leap to Dreamwidth because, frankly, there isn't enough going on here. The site is smaller, so there are fewer posts, and fewer cool people to meet. And all their friends are on LJ, which is of course a self-perpetuating situation: if "everybody" is still on LJ, then there's a huge disincentive against moving, which means that everybody continues to be on LJ.
Lots of people have realized that the best way to address this issue is, well, creating content. Some people are organizing collective efforts to create more content. This is a great idea, except for one small problem: the people who are really good at organizing and creating content are mainly fandom. I have nothing at all against fandom, but I'm not really part of it, and I think that a lot of other people who feel similarly are being put off because they see DW as yet another clubhouse for the cool fandom kids.
But I am going to take a leaf from fandom's book: I'm going to cease sitting around complaining about how DW is too quiet. Instead I'm going to participate in creating content and drawing attention to the cool stuff that already exists. So, I propose a giant non-fandom friending meme (thanks,
delight). If you would like find some new, interesting people to read, or make new friends, or just help highlight how much cool stuff there is on DW, please comment to this post.
You're welcome to say whatever you like, but here's a suggested template:
Your identity: doesn't have to be A/S/L, but anything that you think people should know about you to be able to decide whether they're likely to be interested in getting to know you.
What you are passionate about
How you use Dreamwidth
A link to a recent post of yours that is characteristic of your journal or writing style.
A link to a journal on Dreamwidth you think people might enjoy reading, even if they don't know the writer personally.
Footnote 1: Some people have moral or technical objections to Dreamwidth, or actively prefer LJ. That's totally cool with me – this post isn't addressed to you. I'm looking to involve people who would like to make the move, but are put off because there isn't enough to read or enough people to meet here. I am not at all proselytizing, in other words, just doing my bit to fix what I see as the biggest glaring problem with DW. Other people may see other problems, and I am not trying to fix those.
Footnote 2: If you are involved in fandom, you're extremely welcome to participate. Perhaps you'd like to meet someone who shares some of your less fannish interests. Or you are welcome to go and join in some of the more explicitly fandom-related activities going on instead.
I am going to post this now, rather than waiting until the official three-week fest, because I think now is while the iron is hot and people are motivated to move to a new site. But I'll link it again when the fest starts up on 26th April, around the one-year anniversary of Dreamwidth entering Open Beta. I don't have any strong opinions about the DW-only content thing, and you don't have to be participating in that to participate in this meme.
So, go forth and friend!
ETA: And if you like the idea, please link this post all over the place. Or make your own version, or whatever, but mainly spread the word as much as possible

How you use Dreamwidth: Reader and commenter more than a poster. Recently most posts have been either political links or Pagan related as I'm studying Reclaiming/Feri with a local teacher. My posts filter down to LJ and the public ones are picked up by Facebook.

How I use Dreamwidth: DW is my new online home; I hope to be here for years and years and years. I crosspost most things to IJ, and haven't posted at LJ at all (except the occasional "hey guys? I'm not here any more") in a long time. I post a lot of fannish stuff, a lot of religious stuff, and a scattered array of other stuff.
Representative posts:: Hmm. How recent is "recent?" Been scattered recently. Wrote some glee about my kid's icky former school is tanking. If I go back a bit, I posted about Sanity, Rationality, and the In and Ir thereof. I also keep a handful of posts in my profile for an overview of how & what I write.

Date: 2010-03-17 05:25 am (UTC)What you are passionate about: Stories and Art. Poetry, Mythology, Fairytales, Folklore and seeing how all of those infuse life. Corvids. Animation [including good ol' Saturday morning cartoons] and graphic novels. Writing. Fandom [it has to be said]. Feminism. Road trips, roadside attractions, diners and concrete dinosaurs. My state and the city I love in. New Orleans and Ireland. Paganism. Music. Bellydancing. Genre-wise, horror and magical realism. Life itself.
How you use Dreamwidth:Thus far, I've used it more to comment and read than post. It took me a very long time to get comfortable over on LJ; I'm hoping that I can settle in here with greater speed. I do talk about life a lot in my posts, as I see all kinds of Shiny Things in the day-to-day. Mostly I'm still trying to find my sea-legs here and meet folks.

Date: 2010-03-17 11:07 am (UTC)I'm also poly and sapiosexual, though I usually filter those posts pretty heavily. Although I haven't set up custom filters here yet, so who knows? Anyway, if you're opposed to such things, you may not want to friend me.
I believe in fat acceptance and body acceptance, and I do write sometimes (or link to posts) about being fat and what that means and navigating a society that can be negative or outright hostile to certain body types. (I'm a size 18, 5'4", just over 200 lbs, and while you don't need to know that, I'm okay with having it Out There. :-) ) All that said, while I may skim your posts on dieting, I won't hate on them.
Passion: I'm passionate about mental health, due to my own struggles with clinical depression and anxiety. I wish good therapy and (if necessary) medical care were available for all who want them. Conversely, I also agree with a friend who says we need more shamans and less therapists.
I'm passionate about kids, my own and other people's, and I want a world where they know both that they're safe and valued.
I'm passionate about writing and words.
I'm passionate about relationships and sex and what they mean and how we talk about them. I'm passionate about things like gender and sexual orientation being on a fluid continuum. I'm passionate about how all bodies and genders and types of people can be beautiful.
I'm passionate about the metaphysical, though if you're not, it's not a dealbreaker. Mostly I like hearing about people's spiritual paths and why they are (or are not) on one.
Okay, maybe this is a little tl;dr, but I'm a passionate person. :-D
How I Use Dreamwidth: I use Dreamwidth for posting, and I crosspost to LJ. I still do most of my reading on LJ, because all my friends are there, blahblah. I am one of the recent migrators from LJ, actually. :-) I'd love to make friends here though.

Date: 2010-03-17 11:11 am (UTC)What am I passionate about? Um. Stuffs. I read a lot and (on my LJ) chronicle all paper books that I read. I also make a quick summary at the end of each month and have started posting them on DW as well. I like big, complicated things. Networks, co-operating computers, piles and piles of unstructured data to try to make sense of. I have played (pen&paper) RPGs since my early teens and have been known to design new ones from scratch. I've also knocked out a couple of computer games (not RPG ones, though), because the concept intrigued me. When I have some spare time, I write, mostly stuff set in worlds of my own.
So, how to I use Dreamwidth? Mostly, I default to "locked to no specific access", with a couple of filters to allow people to see less of what I write. I occasionally post completely unlocked things, but that is the exception.
Recent, open, post, that is almost but not quite representational A small thing on Newton-Raphson fractals, from December.

Date: 2010-03-17 11:23 am (UTC)I've been using my Dreamwidth journal partly for teaching stuff like this one, and partly for character journals for one of my roleplaying games. Altriona is a lady elf turned pirate in the Warhammer universe. At other points in the year I write more fiction, but I'm just too busy at the moment, so my journal is split between character journals, rundowns of cool lessons usually but not exclusively in math, and venting when I'm fed up with my kids. (They're grade five. They're entering puberty. Venting saves my soul alive.)
I'll spend more time on DW if I end up with a larger circle of friends who aren't also posting to LJ. At the moment the crossover on my list is such that I have no need to visit both.

How you use Dreamwidth I use DW as my (more) professional blog (meaning my links to blog posts on Twitter point here), using it to discuss items that relate to architecture and my interests. It cross posts back to LJ due to the number of friends I still have there, so there is no need to follow in both places, however I will state that my LJ acct is a free one while my DW account is a seed one. (You see who I feel is worth giving money to). I took a hiatus at the end of last year, but have now resumed posting at least once a week, with the goal of getting back to a post a day. Work is making this goal challenging, to say the least.

Date: 2010-03-17 12:12 pm (UTC)Your identity: USA citizen, late 20s, female, unmarried & w/no kids, raised agnostic-atheist, government worker for the state Dept. Conservation & Recreation, pro-military & "South Park Republican", boating & hockey fan, hobby artist/author & occasional cosplayer, and who is actively involved in the video game & game music community (specifically with the Music And Gaming Festival/MAGFest). Phew. I think that was a mouthful.
What you are passionate about: My pets (dog, cat, snake, fish), my family & friends, my career, and my toy hobbies (gaming, boating, travel).
How you use Dreamwidth: Typically, I post about things relating to my hobbies (noted above), frequently interspersed with 'work posts' that delve into life as a park ranger & conservation officer. I was never active in fandom, but I still comment on those that catch my interest (more so with TV & video games and less so with anime/manga, lately). You never need to ask my permission or give me an explanation to watch/unwatch me.

Date: 2010-03-17 01:20 pm (UTC)Identity :: 30-something plural attending university for the first time. Seeking degrees in history and anthropology with a huge concentration on East Asia. Heck, in one journal, you get several for the price of one.
Passions :: Love, Life, Laughter! Slightly fannish, but not hugely so, and rarely talk about it in the journal. Very into life betterment and living life to the fullest. Adore all kinds of music, books, and movies. Have a passion for history, other cultures, and gender (hence the areas of university study).
Dreamwidth use :: Tend to write at least once a week, if not more. Postings consist mostly of daily life (lately about trying to study abroad in Japan) - fears and anxieties faced with grace and dignity (hopefully!) and some flailing. Occasionally a thoughtful post will slip in, but trying not to be that serious about life.

My journal: Is access-locked, and my posts are generally slice-of-life things: morning bitching, afternoon bitching; fannish squee. More sensitive things get filtered; occasionally I break off and go into thoughtful thinky posts about whatever is currently preoccupying me. I am drama-averse, though I give good rant from time to time. I strive to be mildly entertaining and to remain a sense of perspective about myself. I maintain an open subscribe/unsubscribe policy: relationships change and grow, and sometimes end and that's okay.
Commenting: If you can see it, you're welcome to weigh in. I am currently working on commenting more often in other journals. (See above re: introversion.)
I'd love to expand my DW circle!

Date: 2010-03-17 05:15 pm (UTC)What You Are Passionate About: Reading and writing, music and movies and life and love. Family and friends, and people in general as opposed to ideas. I like ideas, but I'm more interested in what you think of the ideas, in how the ideas affect you and the living of your life, and why. I am passionate about life and the living of it, in giving life meaning, in the belief that not seeing something doesn't mean it isn't there. I love words and language and the myriad ways they can be put together to form thoughts, ideas, expressions. I love food and video games, and mostly just spending time with those I love. I love - deeply, wholly, unconditionally.
How You Use Dreamwidth: I'm mostly a chronicler, on average 3-4 times a month, sometimes more, sometimes less; I post about life and how I view the things that affect me, things that happened to me, things that amuse me or that I find interesting. I vent about work and family, anything that comes to mind. And I always enjoy knowing what others think about things, hearing about similar things that others go through, and even just opinions from others about anything I've mentioned in my journal. I love the crosspost function because I write many posts while at work, where LJ is blocked but DW is not - and all my friends are there with no intentions of coming here. But I like DW better, so I've been stepping up my search for new people here, to find friends and pull them into my life, and hope they enjoy me enough to pull me into theirs.

Date: 2010-03-17 05:37 pm (UTC)What you are passionate about: writing and reading all sorts, I'm trying to expand my library and try out different genres. I love science having been bright up by my chemist father, our day-trips consisted of visiting the local power-station or chemical plant. I used to be more into my fandoms but seem to have slipped out of them when I came to uni, so they don't really crop up in my conversations as much as they used to. The main exception to this would probably be video games, and in particular pokémon--it's that thing that get me really excited, so with the new games coming out soon I will be gushing. A lot.
How you use Dreamwidth: I haven't been on DW for a while because I was having problems with depression and housing and uni work and all that jazz, but I plan on staying! My journal is mostly me rambling about what I've been up to, complaining about things that bother me, and getting excited over seagulls and ice-cream.
I don't really have any particular post that's typical, but pretty much all of my entries are public if you want to have a poke around. I'm hoping to become more active than I have been in the past couple of months, so I should be around more!

I'm trying to get back into web design because a few years ago I used to be militantly passionate about html. My favorite kind of web designs are the ones that serve no purpose other than to exist or perhaps entertain me :D. I hate Flash except when it is used to make stupid games and yet I still have to know how to use it. I also love typography! Suffice to say, I'm probably overinvested, and given the chance, would probably share my ~feelings~ on any of the aforementioned subjects.
Also I ♥ comics and manga! :D?

Date: 2010-03-17 06:18 pm (UTC)I consider myself mildly talented at most everything and unable to truly focus on one of them, but this means my topics range wildly. I like cooking (or food in general) and reading books and tea. I'm big into common sense and looking at things from the wrong perspective.
DW is my conversation with everyone. It's the 15 emails I would have sent to friends, the conversations no one has time to have because I'd call at the wrong time, and my own space to sort through what I'm thinking. It's where I can share my creative attempts to get beyond the equivalent of macaroni collage.
I write about just about everything that's in my head. Politics. Recent books read or movies watched. Food experiments. Tech things that bother me. My favorite recent post is about the negative aspects of happiness.
I also wrote a first draft of this comment and put it in my own space.
I like the food experiments

How you use Dreamwidth - chronicling my days and nights. That way we don't end up like Zardoz.
A link to a recent post of yours that is characteristic of your journal or writing style. How about this?
A link to a journal on Dreamwidth you think people might enjoy reading, even if they don't know the writer personally

Date: 2010-03-17 08:11 pm (UTC)My passions: Art, music, trans/queer issues, my dog, walking, and everything else on the interests list of my profile. I write, a little, but I'm not involved in fandom any more and I don't currently post fic on DW. This may or may not change in the future.
How I use DW: I post a couple of times a week, when I have something to talk about. Mostly day-to-day stuff, although there is the gender thing as well. Nearly everything I post here is public although if I ever post artworks or fic they would usually be f'locked.
A recent post: How I managed to walk over 18000 steps in a day
Reccommending:
EDITED TO ADD: I have abandoned LJ now. Pretty much all my LJ friends post on DW as well so there's no longer any need for it.
