liv: Stylised sheep with blue, purple, pink horizontal stripes, and teacup brand, dreams of Dreamwidth (sheeeep)
[personal profile] liv
Here's the thing: a lot of people are about ready to leave LJ over the latest shenanigans. But they don't want to make the leap to Dreamwidth because, frankly, there isn't enough going on here. The site is smaller, so there are fewer posts, and fewer cool people to meet. And all their friends are on LJ, which is of course a self-perpetuating situation: if "everybody" is still on LJ, then there's a huge disincentive against moving, which means that everybody continues to be on LJ.

Lots of people have realized that the best way to address this issue is, well, creating content. Some people are organizing collective efforts to create more content. This is a great idea, except for one small problem: the people who are really good at organizing and creating content are mainly fandom. I have nothing at all against fandom, but I'm not really part of it, and I think that a lot of other people who feel similarly are being put off because they see DW as yet another clubhouse for the cool fandom kids.

But I am going to take a leaf from fandom's book: I'm going to cease sitting around complaining about how DW is too quiet. Instead I'm going to participate in creating content and drawing attention to the cool stuff that already exists. So, I propose a giant non-fandom friending meme (thanks, [personal profile] delight). If you would like find some new, interesting people to read, or make new friends, or just help highlight how much cool stuff there is on DW, please comment to this post.

You're welcome to say whatever you like, but here's a suggested template:
Your identity: doesn't have to be A/S/L, but anything that you think people should know about you to be able to decide whether they're likely to be interested in getting to know you.
What you are passionate about
How you use Dreamwidth
A link to a recent post of yours that is characteristic of your journal or writing style.
A link to a journal on Dreamwidth you think people might enjoy reading, even if they don't know the writer personally.

Footnote 1: Some people have moral or technical objections to Dreamwidth, or actively prefer LJ. That's totally cool with me – this post isn't addressed to you. I'm looking to involve people who would like to make the move, but are put off because there isn't enough to read or enough people to meet here. I am not at all proselytizing, in other words, just doing my bit to fix what I see as the biggest glaring problem with DW. Other people may see other problems, and I am not trying to fix those.

Footnote 2: If you are involved in fandom, you're extremely welcome to participate. Perhaps you'd like to meet someone who shares some of your less fannish interests. Or you are welcome to go and join in some of the more explicitly fandom-related activities going on instead.

I am going to post this now, rather than waiting until the official three-week fest, because I think now is while the iron is hot and people are motivated to move to a new site. But I'll link it again when the fest starts up on 26th April, around the one-year anniversary of Dreamwidth entering Open Beta. I don't have any strong opinions about the DW-only content thing, and you don't have to be participating in that to participate in this meme.

So, go forth and friend!

ETA: And if you like the idea, please link this post all over the place. Or make your own version, or whatever, but mainly spread the word as much as possible

red_trillium: Smiling white cat with "Bag Kitty Approves" written on it (Bag Kitty Approves)
From: [personal profile] red_trillium
Your Identity - A bit of this & that. There's a fair bit on my profile, but in a nutshell (& not necessarily all on my profile) I've just turned 40, am FTM, a photographer, a husband, Dad to 4 cats and several fish. I'm an American who's been in New Zealand for the last 9 years, moved here after meeting my wife online.

What you are passionate about - Well, passionate? I don't know about that. But things I'm into at different levels are archery, gardening, photography, critters, the environment, reading. I like my tv but am not fannish about it. I enjoy a variety of music, love to cook & bake and occassionally do crafts (although this has fallen a bit by the wayside since I've been busy with my online shop).

How you use Dreamwidth - For just about everything??? I'm a sporadic poster and have a few accounts. I have [personal profile] red_trillium as my general everything journal (work/life/photos/etc). It was originally on LJ and I cross post it there. I have [personal profile] pinepig primarily for my photography and shop posts. Then there's [personal profile] pinepigs_garden primarily for my gardening posts. Oh, and I set up a comm for archery here, [community profile] arrow_rest although it's very quiet right now.

A link to a recent post of yours that is characteristic of your journal or writing style Ummm...I cross-post sometimes between journals so it's hard to say. I do also exclusively-post to one and then post a link to it on one of the others so people are aware its there. This how to about terrariums is something I posted at [personal profile] pinepigs_garden but also at [personal profile] red_trillium. This is one of my archery photos I posted at [personal profile] pinepig, [personal profile] red_trillium & a shorter version at [community profile] arrow_rest. Check any of my journals out if you want. Only [personal profile] red_trillium & [personal profile] pinepig have a mix of friends locked and public posts.

A link to a journal on Dreamwidth you think people might enjoy reading, even if they don't know the writer personally - Umm, there's a few & I hope they don't mind me putting their names here. I like [personal profile] angelikitten's posts. She has up and down moments like we all do but posts a variety of queer-thoughts, gender-thoughts, mostly real life & some fict. She's talented with styles and icons and made some cute rainbow people moods. [personal profile] ariestess posts both real life and fict stuff and is fairly prolific with her quotes, Fun Time Wasting Links and posts DailyOm thoughts.

For comms I'd suggest [community profile] thriftycooking for great tips on cooking on a budget, [community profile] actyourwage for great tips, help & support to live within your means and [community profile] photofriends for great all-around photography posts, tips & questions.

PS--in case you hadn't noticed, I'm a tad verbose. Just a tad mind you. And it drives my coworkers crazy when they want me to explain something or tell them how to do something. :)

Hello! Von is not actually my given name, but I answer to it and it's written on my coffee mug, so it probably counts as real by now. I have a chronic fear of introductions and identifications and consequently find this sort of thing deeply awkward.

*swigs wine*

Let's see. I'm from the UK. I teach English and Drama to young adults and mature students. I hope, eventually, to introduce myself as a Doctor of Necromancy and not be lying. I used to speak four languages, play two instruments, and write increasingly original fiction more naturally than I could speak. I have neglected all these things of late, and that makes me sad sometimes.

*swigs wine again*

Instead of doing those things, I play games - miniature wargames and devolved roleplaying games that are more like armchair theatre than anything that has formal rules. I like steampunk but don't like making a lifestyle statement out of things I like. I think in parentheses and frequently forget about little things like commas, or breathing. I am an incorrigible pedant, and otherwise a shame and an embarrassment to be around: I talk to myself, sing in public, break into impassioned monologues at the drop of a hat, and can fall over while standing perfectly still on flat ground. I watch a lot of Doctor Who, but we're not here to talk about that today.

*swigs wine, considers, swigs wine again, for longer*

I use the Dreamwidth thing to pull together content from lots of places where I used to blog, sort of hoping that I could get people into gaming and people into media fandom and people into occult history and people into theatre and people into Victoriana or the erotic potential of artificial intelligence (no, not at the same time... although...) to talk to each other, but then I sort of stopped writing content for a bit, and it sort of stopped working out. I should get onto that, really. I'm interested in social justice, but I don't write about it much - I'm not sure I get to have an opinion on some things.

Oh, and by the way - you never have to ask me about subscribing, just go ahead, and I don't believe in 'inactive entries'. Read back and comment on whatever takes your fancy - that's what email notification's there for.

*contemplates wine, takes another swig*

Here's a post I made about how I design narrative spaces for roleplaying games, which is the sort of thing I'd like to write more often.

[personal profile] legionseagle is one of my favourite Dreamwidthy people - full of righteous wrath and with a wicked sense of humour. If I'm allowed to cheat and mention two things, I'm really liking [community profile] actyourwage, too.

*drains glass, stands up, wonders how strong the wine actually IS*

There. That wasn't so bad. Dunno what I was scared of, really.

Teaching English and Drama is lovely (school librarian here, with a theatre-history professor father, so I grew up with the Theatre bits).

But you really had me at throwing occult history into the mix.

(I'm also a long-time Who fan, way back, but I don't post about it much, and I'm not particularly fannish-community about it. Just, y'know, have seen everyone of the older series ever shown in the US, most more than once, and a goodly slice of the new series, though I think I'm still needing to track down one or two.)

I'm a mid-thirties Swedish archaeologist, working in Britain. [personal profile] ossamenta is my archaeology blog, where I talk about archaeological matters, mostly related to animal and human bones, and a bit of life in Britain. The blog has been a bit quiet lately, as work has been very intense. Hopefully I can get time to post more often later in the year.

Privately, I'm fannish and nerdy (of the fantasy/sci-fi/book/comic/history side of things rather than the computer side). I can be a stickler for historical accuracy when I do re-enactment (that said, I realise not everyone has the same standards in every aspect of re-enactment, and IMO the important thing is knowing where you take shortcuts and to justify them to yourself) (as an aside, I also like parentheses). This seems to shine through when I post, as I sometimes add reference sources, in case any reader wants to do a follow-up.

I haven't been active on Dreamwidth that long, so I can't really point to a typical post. Have a look through and see if you like it.

Recommendation: I usually find [personal profile] oursin's posts very interesting, particularly the ones connected to historical matters.

Identity: Thirty-something American expat scientist living and working at Imperial College, London, England. If pressed, will identify as atheist, liberal and feminist, but tend not to be particularly shouty about any of those things. Prefer to be shouty about things I feel positive about, like space science outreach.

What you are passionate about: Teaching. Remote sensing techniques. Instrumentation for physics and chemistry. Photography. Painting. Being a catmother.

How you use Dreamwidth: I use DW as a mirror to LJ, where I started blogging nine years ago. I'm finding that they're growing into separate communities, though, as I'm more active in science communities on DW and more active in photography communities on LJ.

Most of my posts are public. I'm pretty relaxed about mutual subscription and access as long as you post regularly so I have some idea who you are.

A link to a recent post of yours that is characteristic of your journal or writing style: The Epic Post of Outreach Part 2 is characteristic of my longer posts, while the Generic Meme gives a flavour for my shorter ones.

pinesandmaples: A picture of Ben Franklin on the side of a paper box in Philly. (Philly: Ben Franklin)
From: [personal profile] pinesandmaples
Your identity: Suzanne. Nearly 25. I am a city-dweller at heart, but I'm a senior at a college in the middle of freaking nowhere, PA. (Therefore, I am a little stir-crazy.) I'm in a long-distance marriage with fellow DW sheep [personal profile] rooibos. (Therefore, I am more than the usual amount of crazy.) I'm a queer, genderqueer ecumenical Christian with a social justice bent. (Therefore, I am quite content with my crazy.) There are a number of things about my identity that don't come up very often, but they do contribute to my context. For example, I'm kinky, in a life-style D/s relationship, a spinner and knitter, an RA at school, non-monogamous, a vegetarian, fat, mentally ill, the oldest of four children, dying to get out of the US for good, in health limbo, and the beneficiary of a late-in-life divorce. (That last one is a good story. Ask me about it sometime.)

What you are passionate about: I tend to get a little bent-up about the intersection of gay marriage and immigration. Yarn and the use thereof makes me hot and bothered. Reading books and doing crosswords are vital. Oh, and consent! Love consent. I'm also very vocal about women's colleges; and the devaluation of college degrees by over-extension of university good wishes. I'm that friend who says unpopular things because people need to hear them.

How you use Dreamwidth: I try to post things that are worth reading. Lately, it's been one-liners and short complaints about stupid choices people around me have made that impact me. Sometimes, I will wax poetic about how amazing life is. Sometimes, I get really bent-up about an issue. (The state of the world rips my heart out on a regular basis. I try to mourn without navel gazing.) I try to filter out a lot of the really painful parts of my life because I don't know how to comment on them gracefully.

I'm Ember. Pleased to meet you.

Herself: Mongamous het, geeky gnostic, steampunk pirate knitter, red bespectacled redhead who is eagerly looking forward to her 40th bday in two weeks. Haunts the Pacific Northwest with her furkid Jameson, who at this moment is attempting to hijack the keyboard with his Pet-Me-NOW! paws.

What I'm passionate about: Spirituality in all shapes and flavors. Been pagan for 14 years and earned my Wiccan Priestess degree. Currently studying Therioshamanism and learning the nuances of Hinduism. I'm also a ginormous movie buff, newbie photographer, distracted writer, NaNoWriMo winner, and a pop culture fan of: Wonder Woman, BtVS, NCIS, House, and Supernatural.

How I use Dreamwidth to conquer the world: My posts are all over the damn place, like trying to herd a bunch of pagans to meet up in the same place, ON TIME. You will read me getting crafy with my knitting needles, posting photos, pondering deepy thinky thoughts, sharing RL stories of the WTF nature, spiritual anvils, and just plain me being Me.

I admit my posting has slacked as of late, but now that things have calmed down (finances, vet visits), I intend on getting back on the keyboard.

Journal of Repute: Definitely give [personal profile] copperbadge a visit. Sit for a spell. Try the cannoli. You won't be disappointed.

From: [personal profile] ce_jour_la
Your Identity: Elenna in the online world. I'm 20, a third-year university student majoring in English and Psychology with a minor in Philosophy. I hail from California but am freezing to death in upstate New York and working as a law enforcement intern with the local police department. Yes, the cold makes the work difficult! I'm also currently panicking over graduate school applications and searching for a good program in psych and law or forensic psychology. I'm a writer, reader, editor, equestrienne, feminist, relative atheist, introvert, linguist, shooter, scholar, amateur photographer, and a slew of other things.

Passions: Books--I am a voracious reader and lack the time to read as much as I'd like. Music--it keeps me sane. Musicals--I have a huge weak spot for Broadway. Horses--I have two back home, and they're my kids; I cannot live without them. Writing--I write both fanfiction and original fiction and have two novels underway. Throw blankets--I'm cold all the time; shut up. Firearms--I picked up shooting sometime last year and love it. Tea--I drink ridiculous amounts of it. Coffee--ditto. Language--I speak English (obviously), passable French, am teaching myself Arabic, and have a functioning knowledge of several romance languages. I also adore many of the dead languages (Latin, Middle and Old English, Old Norse, etc.). A million other little things (see my profile if you're curious).

Dreamwidth Use: I normally post daily when I can, or at least several times a week. Right now, bogged down in work and uni, I'm on a bit of a semi-hiatus and am therefore less present than normal. I run several communities, volunteer for Dreamwidth (though less than I'd like), and talk about anything from uni to the medical drama that is my life to work to the rest of my [rather boring] life. Fandom is present, both in the form of linked fiction and discussion, but it is by no means all I discuss.)

I am always open to meeting new people and tend to be more verbose and outgoing online than in real life, as I express myself better in writing than verbally. Please, friend away--I'd love to expand my use of Dreamwidth, as most of my current f-list uses LJ as a primary site. :D

My journal is friends-locked, as I am a paranoid idiot and like the semblance of privacy it offers me. As such, I don't have a lot of public posts that aren't fandom-related--though I did an Apple-related PSA of sorts last year, if you're interested.

I do caution you, however, that if civilian gun ownership and/or law enforcement are not your thing, I am probably not your girl. Neither comprises the majority of my posts, but they are rather prominent, and while I always welcome differing opinions, I'm not looking to be flamed, either.

Your identity: I'm Dhara, and clearly quite late to the party! (Not at all surprising.) I'm 22, a pre-med college senior majoring in psychology, with enthusiastic dabbling in astronomy, classics, and anthropology on the way. I am straight, cis-gendered, Indian-American, feminist, atheist (but culturally Hindu), and quite dorky. I love books, I love science, I love art. I am generally sort of cheerfully neurotic, though I've been struggling with clinical depression for some time now and occasionally I flail about that. My family is crazy (sometimes in the awesome way, sometimes not), my friends are awesome (sometimes in the crazy way, sometimes not).

Passionate about: Science. Public health. Fiction and fanfiction (particularly scifi and fantasy). Feminism. Chocolate. Puppies! (Not necessarily in that order.)

How you use Dreamwidth: I switched to DW and changed my user ID because (1) I'd had my LJ since the age of fifteen, a lot of people who knew me in real life at that age knew about the LJ, and I wanted to disassociate, and (2) DW is awesome! I lurk on the edges of fandom, though I am friends with/read people who are right in the thick of it. I used to post and comment constantly, but I took a long hiatus from LJ and it's taking me some time to get back in the habit of posting/commenting. Mostly, I read - I diligently keep up with my reading page and everyone on it, but I'm bad at talking. However, I would like to get to know awesome people, and participate in interesting conversations, so I am trying to talk more! (Really!)

Recent post: Oh, God, I can't think of anything that's not a little silly or grumbly or weird. See: not posting very often. Um. I talk about school a lot? And whatever comes to mind, really, from feminism to Battlestar Galactica to shoes.

Passionate about: Art! I love drawing and painting, but don't have much time to do either of them. I've still yet to transfer my artdump-LJ to DW, so perhaps that interest isn't so relevant... Social justice issues and anti-oppression. Psychology and other sciences. Fiction. Graffiti-collecting. Hiking. Computer games. Movies. Manga/manhwa and anime. Board games.

How you use Dreamwidth: My DW journal was originally started up as a space where I could think issues through, and it had to be separate from my more insular/personal LJ that some RL friends read. I'm finding that I don't use LJ as much anymore due to the crowd and the issues with LJ as a company, and am thinking of posting more daily-life-things to DW under a filter. Or something. I don't post often because of time constraints...but I do read a lot! (And really like gleaning recommendations from her contact list for various media. >_>) One of the great things about DW was the community, so I'm trying to read and interact more with others!

Recent post: Looking back, I seem to linkdrop a lot. O_o Most of the posts are about race in some way (because I need to rant about it somewhere where my RL people can't see it), but I've started to talk more about other things. Maybe!

Links to other journals: [personal profile] ciderpress, [personal profile] deepad, and [personal profile] renay write thoughtful, awesome things.

hi, i'm a bit late but i'll give it a go anyway... hope someone's still reading!

i'm white, middle class, cis, temporarily able bodied, queer female, 30. i live in london, uk and have done for a long long time but am swedish by passport. so far i haven't used my dreamwidth account very much but i'm planning to start using it more so this meme is very timely as i've not managed to make many friends on here yet!

i will be using dw to blog about thing's that i'm passionate about as well as a general space to rant, dissect privilege (my own and others'), plus i'm trying to start externalising some issues related to depression/anxiety which have been taking up too much space in my head lately, hopefully from a somewhat political angle (thinking through connections between mental health, privilege, oppression etc) not just wallowing self-destructive stuff (i'll try to keep that to a minimum!). The more personal stuff will be under lock but i'm mostly happy to give people access - the lock is more to avoid certain people i know in real life reading it.

so, things i'm passionate about! issues related to social justice, in particular (intersectional!) feminist, anti-racist and queer politics. i'm currently in my second year of a part-time phd on British feminism and race. i have a love-hate relationship to feminism due to historical and ongoing exclusionary (racist, transphobic, classist etc.) politics practiced in its name and i spend quite a lot of time going on about that.

plus i like music and books and stuff...

i know this is more about what i plan to write about than what i have already written, so you may be a bit sceptical... but i'm hoping that making some new connections with people on here will help spur me on to start writing more. i'm adding quite a few people who have posted on here, so i look forward to seeing folks around!

Identity
I'm Aliyah. I'm 22 and a research assistant at an IGO in Trinidad right now. I'll be starting a PhD program in French Studies this fall in the US, and I eventually want to be a university professor, specialising in Francophone colonial and postcolonial literature. I'm married to a lovely lady, and we're really into living a happy, sustainable, vegan lifestyle together.

Passions
The aforementioned French literature interests-- more specifically, I'm into women's writing and the treatment of gender and sexuality in the literature. I wrote my undergrad thesis on two of Maryse Conde's novels, and I hope to do more of an examination of her work in grad school. I'm also really into literary translation both ways. I was a double major in college, and my other major was international studies, so I'm also interested in that, again with issues concerning gender and sexuality in the global South, specifically the Caribbean and Latin America.

I'm also really into the politics of exclusion and marginalisation, especially combating racism, homophobia, transphobia, sexism and ableism. My main thought on feminism is that I'll be a post feminist in the post patriarchy!

On the non-academic front, I spin, knit, sew, embroider and cook, and welcome conversations on those topics, too.

How I use DW
Really randomly, quite honestly. I post things about all my interests. I've been really bad about updating lately, but if I had more folks to read, it'd bring me here more. I've never been one to update daily-- more often there are days or weeks between posts.

Your identity: My name is Kira. I'm twenty-two, studying spanish at a local technical college, trying like hell to move to Mexico for a year or two, and thinking about kinda, maybe, sorta eventually going back to school for language studies. I'm a lesbian, but the idea of two men together blows my mind. I'm a musician. I know a little bit about a lot of different things, but find my attention/passion wanders before I'm ever able to know a lot about one or two things. I've struggled with eating disorders and body image since I was young. I hate that I was raped, but can't regret it because otherwise I wouldn't be who I am today. I angst about my inability to write consistantly.

What you are passionate about: Spanish/foregn languages, fanfiction, serving/bartending.

How you use Dreamwidth: Mostly I use Dreamwidth for fandom purposes, but as I've been friending more and more people here, I find that I'm also using it for journaling, meta, and networking as well.

A link to a journal on Dreamwidth you think people might enjoy reading: Everything that pops into mind is fandom related, and while certainly worth the read, isn't really the function of this post. So - I'm open to suggestions.

From: [personal profile] yhlee
Your identity: I'm Yoon Ha Lee, a 30something Korean-American. I write science fiction and fantasy, I got my bachelor's in math (and use that in writing sf/f, although not for math per se!), am a fan (Buffyverse, Fullmetal Alchemist, other things as the mood strikes me), and like to draw and compose for fun. I'm bipolar and on occasion I discuss that, too.
What you are passionate about: Writing. Music theory and composition (amateur level). Books--sometimes sf/f, but mostly nonfiction these days. I especially like reading about military history, linguistics, mathematics, popular science, but I'll read a variety of things for the heck of it.
How you use Dreamwidth: Brief book reports. Sporky rants about books I thought were awful, but I am happy to talk about books I loved, too. TV/manga/other fannish viewing/reading reports. The occasional collection of random links to interesting/peculiar things. It's a potpourri; probably the list of tags is a good indicator of the range of topics that come and go.

auguris: Close up shot of the bottom of a kitten's foot. (Gay coffee)
From: [personal profile] auguris
Your identity: Gabe, Del, or [personal profile] auguris, 25, single gay woman. I grew up on the east coast (MA, NH and RI) and recently moved to Souther California. I work in retail, try to get some writing in when I can, and spend the rest of my free time drinking coffee and playing videogames.

What you are passionate about: Writing. I'm not very confidant about what I write, so I don't post it much, but I'm always working on a story, in my head if not on paper or the computer screen.

I read a lot. Books, fic, the newspaper, the side of cereal boxes, etc. I like reading fantasy/sci-fi series but I'm up to just about anything that can hold my interest.

I like to take pictures, although I unfortunately recently lost my camera and can't afford to replace it at the moment.

I spend an awful lot of time playing videogames. I'll play pretty much anything if it has good gameplay and a decent story line. I prefer horror survival and RPGs, and I don't really like shooters or fighters.

I pay an unhealthy amount of attention to politics, but in spurts. I can only handle so much at a time before I have to look away and do something else. Right now I'm on my ignore-politics-it's-depressing stage.

Oh, and coffee. Ffffffffff coffee.

How you use Dreamwidth: I post original fiction and links, mostly. I keep telling myself I'm going to make a post every day, even if it's a simple "today I woke up and made money. Good night!" post, but I always forget. I run [community profile] stayintheroom and [community profile] literaryquotes here on DW. The first is a prompt community, which I update twice weekly but not always on time. The second is me trying to recreate one of my favorite LJ comms here on DW.

I've been reading a much wider range of interests and posts here on DW than I ever did on LJ. I feel like LJ was my teenage years that I held onto for too long, and DW is blogging adulthood. Which has more to do with my personal growth that LJ or DW, but there it is.

A bit of fiction I posted somewhat recently.

Your identity: I was born in Belgium to Dutch parents and grew up in a tiny tiny Dutch village with four roads and a tree. I'm 26 now and have been studying Mediatechnology since 2003, an education mostly about web development and more recently mobile development. I'm a cis-gendered female heteroflexible open-minded agnostic Humanist with a really really weird brain that regularly trips up on epilepsy, associated medication, atypical depression, and DSPS and whatever other funny labels apply. (I generally think "my brain is frakking weird" and whatever the DSM thinks of it is their business.)
What you are passionate about: feminism, fat acceptance, computers, coding, coffee, cheesecake, science-fiction, NASA, space, imagination, psychology, neuroscience, brains, manga, yaoi, videogames, the internet, sleeping, doing new things, meeting new people, finishing college before the world ends
How you use Dreamwidth: I write about everything that's on my mind. Sometimes this is a lot of angst, sometimes it's silly, sometimes it's fandom or which smartphone to choose or how I'm overjoyed with new boots or make-up or figuring out how to code for Android or how I'm terrified of my upcoming surgery. I write about me. I've become too selfconscious about it, so recently I'm trying not to be, again. I want to use my journal to write, not to be read. I have to put more effort into reading and commenting on my Dreamwidth access list people, because I am too used to checking only LJ. I currently crosspost everything to LJ because there's people on there that I care about who're just never going to move. Nevertheless, I want my DW journal to be more than just a place where I crosspost from. In other words, I need to be kicked in the shins to comment and read DW more, but you won't see any less entries from me than you would on LJ.

A link to a recent post of yours that is characteristic of your journal or writing style.
I don't have any typical entries that are open, so I'll quote some from locked entries instead:

"I've finally come to a place where I think I'm starting to accept that - a sort of Buddhist approach maybe, where I recognize that suffering is just a part of life, and try to agonize less over it. Suffering, and suffering because you're suffering, are different things - and I used to do the latter way too much, making myself even more miserable. These days, I feel miserable more often than not, but I look at my circumstances and I think: yeah, that sort of makes sense. I don't feel the sense that I am a horrible person for not being happy; I don't feel the need to go 'fix' myself; I don't feel bad for feeling bad."

---

"But does that really explain the blatant exclusion of male/male relationship in a videogame that is otherwise inclusive even beyond the lines of reality? I don't know. I don't think so. Why is BioWare not afraid to suggest intimacy between two women, between a human and an alien, between different races and genders and species and colors -
not afraid of anything but the depiction of two men together? Why is that so offensive? Why is that so bad? What the hell is up with that ridiculous double standard? They are pretty much saying "homosexuality is only okay if it's lesbians". And that is bullshit, so very much."

---

"Me and my mom went to the ABN Amro World Tennis Tournament in the Ahoy in Rotterdam yesterday. It was awesome! It's my mom's fault I became a tennis fan, and we immediately decided we should make this a yearly thing. I also think it's the first time I actually went to a sports event. XD"

Your identity: I'm a Canadian,(Kemetic) Pagan, feminist, vegetarian, cisgendered woman. I'm a huge geek, a reader, a baker, a tattoo enthusiast, fanfic writer with perpetual writers block. I love most any urban fantasy. I'm celibate by choice, but identify as straight. I am between schools at the moment. but hope to get back to it. I have a rather twisted sense of gallows humour, if you're easily ofended I may not be a good friending choice.

What you are passionate about: feminism, Paganism, several fandoms: notably Supernatural (cognitive dissonance in 3..2...), politics, general activism, psychology, random weirdness

How you use Dreamwidth: mostly I ramble about SPN, but I'm trying to write about my other interests before I shoot myself for being a one trick fandom pony

From: [personal profile] senmut
My identity: I am [personal profile] senmut. I am non-labelist at heart, but the following labels may apply: Bisexual leaning toward lesbian, mother (not custodial), widow (by my own lights), pagan (no true 'school' of thought there), girlfriend (happily so), and as open-minded as I can be. Oh, yeah, I live in the US, identify as Southern.

What I am passionate about: Oh man, I tend to try to be both laid back and open minded, eschewing passionate responses, but of late the one that keeps seeming to be my stumbling block is taking creative works out of cultural/historical period context and trying to apply modern standards to them. But that's more a peeve than anything. My real passion got stirred up some few weeks ago when I discovered there was a dig going on in turkey that challenges all the sociological record of how civilization advanced. Yes, my passion is that of the times before history solidifying.

How I use Dreamwidth: I write (drabbles in a billion fandoms), I try to vent my work and health and spiritual thoughts (the last are filtered and not so active), and I read. Avidly. I love the Network function, and I will browse on it as much as I have spare time for. I even occasionally comment.

Hmm, I hope this okay, because this journal is brand new, though I'm not new to Dreamwidth - I just wanted a new account/name without all my old journal baggage. That, and, I had a hard time integrating into DW initially, as I don't watch television, rarely watch movies, and most of my reading is non-fiction - so I'm not into fandom at all.

Identity: 30 year-old environmental scientist and single mother of three boys.
Passions: Writing, poetry, painting, the environment.
How I use Dreamwidth: Okay, so this account is new...but I'll tell you that I'm [livejournal.com profile] beautyofgrey, if that helps you gauge if you like my writing style. I want to use Dreamwidth as a shelter from the storm and also a place to write creatively.

Right so I'm a 30 year old self-confessed geek living in New Zealand. My journal tends to contain a lot of thoughts on TV, movies and books, although I'm trying to keep those to my blog a little more and post more posts about me. Most of my personal posts are locked, however anything without reference to me is open to the public.

I am studying Asian Studies at University and will occasionally post thoughts on topics I've discussed in class. I'm an agnostic but respect everyones right to believe as they wish as long as they don't try to convert me. Basically I'm pretty easy going. I don't condone racism, homophobia or any kind of discrimination or hatred and I don't believe in forcing my views on any subject on anyone else.

I love anime, foreign movies, books, learning and gaming - be it pen & paper or computer RPG.

One Dreamwidth account I love reading is [personal profile] lady_ganesh she manages to link me to all sorts of interesting things that I really should think about!

Your identity: I'm a thirty-something academic librarian in the MidWest with two cats, too many student loans to pay off, a job that is trying to steal my every waking minute (at least until June), and a love of destroying the librarian stereotype for unsuspecting people. :>

What you are passionate about: My cats don't make much of an appearance in my journal, but they do kinda rule my life. I have been heavily involved in fandom (er, was, until work exploded) and have finally found an idea tempting enough to branch out into original fiction. I've been knitting since I was in single digits and am an avid yarn collector. One day I will have time to do stuff with that yarn. I have drop spindles and finally met someone who's promised to teach me how to use them (as opposed to trying to learn from a book - it wasn't working). I read avidly when I have time, anything from fiction (sf/f, mystery, humor, drama) to non-fiction (I have a geek!reading list, it is long). Science and agriculture as passions of mine, though they don't make much of an appearance in my journal either. I'm not ashamed to admit that the Facebook game Castle Age is one of the things that's helped keep me sane the past month or two, same with Avernum. Shoes.

How you use Dreamwidth: Other than stare longingly wishing I had time to update? I've been very quiet lately because of an abundance of work and a shortage of time. Fannish stuff is unlocked, anything involving my personal life is locked. Lately it's been a lot of RL/work updates (if there's been anything at all). There will soon be additional panicking about moving again (but just to the downstairs apartment).

A link to a journal on Dreamwidth: [community profile] shoes has also helped keep me sane, but is wonderfully dangerous for my pocketbook.

We have much in common!

- Librarian (though in a school library, not academic) but also fond of destroying librarian stereotypes. (Especially since I look like one, because it's the combination of comfy+professional that works for me. Long skirt, knit top, glasses, long hair up in some format.) But then you get me talking, and yeah, not so much what people assume.

- I spin! Don't know where you are, but if you're within driving reach of Minneapolis, I have spinning resources for you. (Or could show you myself.) Also, if in driving reach, there's a great fiber festival up here in May, and I can blather at length if you're interested.

- Shadow Unit, Yay!

- I am not a shoe person, which is probably a good thing due to living in a tiny little house. But that's okay, I like watching other people be enthusiastic about such things.

From: [personal profile] sin_after_sin
Your identity: Female, het, cis-gendered, Agnostic, butch, blue-collar, self-educated, still evolving, 80's teenager, writer.

What you are passionate about: Writing and music. Feminism. Photography. Cooking. Media of all types.

How you use Dreamwidth: I'm using it to write about music, both current and past. And stories both true and fictional. Mostly ABOUT music from the 80's. I was totally an 80's metal chick, and I identified with the music in a very strong, personal way. Which creates somewhat of a strange dichotomy now inside of me, considering how incredibly sexist metal was. It's something I like to write about and frame stories around.

I quite like reading blogs about other people's lives. Even if you think it's boring, I might find it quite fascinating.

I also post pics, sometimes photos I've taken and some not. I might talk about writing.
Occasional fannish tidbits might sneak in from time to time, mostly because I'm in lust with Chris Meloni and thus fall prey to my own fangirly whims.

A link to a recent post of yours that is characteristic of your journal or writing style: You know, my entire journal so far is pretty much contained on the first page, so if you check it out you'll get a fair sample. I'm just starting out. I do have a little post about The Runaways and a collection of small vignettes that I wrote about a friend of mine and our shared love of metal.

A link to a journal on Dreamwidth: Hmm. I'm still exploring and building my reading list.

I'm confident that I am beyond 1 standard deviation.

I am a male, straight, 26, computer geek, Pentecostal/Charismatic Christian. I am a boyfriend, grad student (MS in comp sci) intern.

I look forward to being a software engineery kind of person. Or developer. Or programmer. I lump them all together as being a "technologist".

There's a lot of things I have interest in - passion is something that's terribly dangerous if its not worthwhile. I once had a passion for World of Warcraft. I have a passion for my girlfriend, for God, and for living free. I have authority issues.

I can play 2 instruments, converse about various aspects of history, babble badly in German, discuss theology (with emphasis on Reformation and post-Reformation thought), bore myself with talking philosophy. In the wrong light, I can be seen as a stuffed shirt kinda guy. I have bored a computer science Ph.D. with my discussions on the intricacies of processor design.

I can also produce discussions of truly mind-blowing mundanity such as, "went to work lately; did thesis research; wish weather was warmer; things are ok". Which, since I am unconvinced of the need to produce 5-page essays on Dreamwidth, I usually do. Dreamwidth, for me, is about conversations and keeping up with people.

I am not in any fandom. I once was a Star Wars fan. Then Phantom Menace came out. I also enjoyed anime, until I tired of the standardized characters and emotions. Once in a while I will watch a good anime. I prefer to read science fiction and fantasy; terribly cheesy and enjoyable ones.

The last book I bought and read was Red Storm Rising, by Tom Clancy. Prior to that, I read an enjoyable YA fantasy which name I cannot remember (especially since I'm travelling right now).

I am curious about neurodiversity and wonder about things If They Were Different.

Your identity: Twenty-something, female, currently transplanted to New York City. Middle/high school physics/math teacher at an independent school. In a long-distance stable monogamous relationship with a boy. Vaguely interested in things pagan, but my main religious commitment for the last couple of years has been Unitarian Universalist church, and I have a lot of respect for the wisdom of established religions. Grew up poor but on scholarship; have some knee-jerk class issues that I'm trying to work with/on/through. Non-evangelical vegetarian with few qualms about squishing invertebrates. Did two years as the president of my college's science fiction club, but have mostly recovered.

What you are passionate about: Teaching and educational philosophy. Organic spirituality. Participatory music, especially vocal. Feminist science fiction, such as Octavia Butler and Ursula Le Guin. (More detailed list of formative literature here. Armchair linguistics.

How you use Dreamwidth: As a braindump, record of the bits of my life that seem worth recording and communicating, try to make them beautiful and memorable. To gather viewpoints and perspectives from other people about things I don't know enough about, or don't trust my biases on. Largely, to communicate with people I already know and post life updates, but discussion is also important.

A link to a recent post of yours that is characteristic of your journal or writing style. Walking Lightly. Giornata della Memoria. Critical Mass. Much of the really good recent long stuff is locked, though.

A link to a journal on Dreamwidth you think people might enjoy reading, even if they don't know the writer personally. [personal profile] commodorified I found randomly through an interests search, and have been hooked since.

Your identity: I'm Mia, and this icon probably sums me up better than I could myself. 24, Christian, Filipina living in the Philippines, bisexual, cisgendered. I'm an economics grad student still hopelessly in love with physics -- I was a physics major as an undergrad before all sorts of things kicked in and I switched to econ. In between exams I draw and write and read papers that have absolutely nothing to do with my actual research.

What you are passionate about: The Philippines. Social justice. The reform of science education in the Philippines is definitely an advocacy I'll actively take up in the future. I'm in love with physics and math; sadly it is unrequited. I love art, especially detailed ink work, and calligraphy, especially if it features non-Latin alphabets. I am passionate about doing things to instigate progress and better lives with the tools of economics, though yeah, it's totally understandable if people think econ is boring. I get bored with it a lot, too. I'm passionate about writing and reading -- poetry, fantasy, and science fiction in particular. I'm trying to educate myself on issues involving gender and race in hopes of going from vague feelings to informed convictions.

How you use Dreamwidth: Pics of works in progress, all sorts of rambling about endeavors both academic and insane, snapshots (in words and/or images) of my day. I want to write about the Philippines too -- not just how messed up it is, but the things I enjoy about it: riding death-defying jeepneys, going to wet markets, trawling malls and the shopping districts of Quiapo, eating balut and all kinds of amazing (and horrifying, according to my friends) food. I don't think I'll be writing a lot of deeply personal stuff here, so just about everything (except for detailed scans of work in progress, and posts that mention real-life details) will be left public.

A link to a recent post of yours that is characteristic of your journal or writing style. Ahh, I started posting to DW just last week, so there's not much here yet, but: intro post, typical mess work in progress post; art-type babbling, calligraphy stuff, things that will get my economist badge revoked on my blog. I sometimes crosspost from my blog to my LJ, and will probably be doing that with DW too if I like the post enough. Almost all entries on my LJ are locked, so unfortunately I can't link to the less serious posts I make when I haven't slept for over thirty hours, but in case you're curious: [livejournal.com profile] miir.
